Boston, Foreigner, Michael Jackson, and Other ‘Classics’

Posted September 9, 2009 | Laura Christianson

As we were finishing up breakfast, I commented to my 13-year-old, “Wow, you start 8th grade today. Last year of junior high. You’re going to be the BMOC.”

He gave me a blank stare. “BMOC? What are you talking about?”Boston Album Cover

“You know. The acronym. Like LOL, BRB, and all that. BMOC. Don’t you know what it means?”

“Never heard of it,” he said, rolling his eyes.

My 17-year-old shook his head, too. “Mom, you’re crazy,” he said. “That BMOC thing must be from the dark ages.”

A few minutes later, I redeemed myself (at least, with my 17-year-old). He asked me if I’d ever heard Boston’s song, ‘More Than A Feeling.’ “It’s the best song on Rock Band,” he informed me.

“Not only have I heard it, I have the album. The ORIGINAL album. Like, on a RECORD. An LP.”

I proceeded to unearth what he calls “the big black CD” from my collection of 70s and 80s records. We carefully slipped the album from its sleeve and he asked, “What do these run on?”

I proudly demonstrated how to use my turntable, started it up, and cranked up the volume.

“How do you fast forward between songs?” he asked.

Oh brother. Do I feel ancient or what?

I showed him how to eyeball the record so he could see the space between songs. Then I demonstrated how to lift up the arm so the stylus (which we call a needle) didn’t scratch the record when he was manually “fast forwarding” to the next song.

Next, I broke out my 45s. “You can play these, too,” I informed him. “I’ve got singles from Foreigner, Aerosmith, Styx, Queen – you name it.”

“Hey, there’s only one song on it! How come? Why’s there a big hole in the middle of the record? How do you get it to play the song with that big hole in the middle?”

This time, I was the one rolling my eyes.Michael Jackson Thriller

After our “lesson” ended, my son asked me one final question. “Do you have Michael Jackson’s Thriller?”

“Of course I do. I have the original album – on cassette. Let me go get it; then I’ll show you how to use the tape player.”

Question of the Day:

Do you know what BMOC stands for? The first person who comments with the correct answer (no fair looking it up online) wins a free copy of my e-book, Blogophobia Conquered (a $20 value)

    BIG MAN ON CAMPUS LOL

I think going to CDs was good but I hate that they scratch up like albums. If they can make them without scratching, they would be perfect.

I’m actually thinking about ROCK STAR now that they’ve introduced the Beatles. I think I would enjoy that.

I have a 12 year old and 9 year old and the stuff they say now, cracks me up. They would never be the big man on campus. LOL

Isn’t it terrible to be getting older and dating ourselves? I get very odd looks from younger clients when I schedule the next session with “Same bat time. Same bat channel.”
