Bellevue Hair Salon’s Hottest-Selling Product: Canned Tuna!

“Would you like a cup of tea… or coffee… or a mimosa?”

Angela Welsh routinely offers her customers a refreshing drink while she cuts, colors, and styles their hair in her Bellevue, Washington salon.

And she serves the drink with a side of tuna.


Yes, you read that correctly.

When Angela’s clients ask what her husband does for a living, she explains that Michael is the skipper of the Thor, a tuna boat that plies the Pacific off the Washington and Oregon coasts.

A few years ago, Michael and Angela started having some of their best catches commercially canned, and they gave the tuna away to family and friends.

When people realized how tasty ThorTuna is, they asked if they could buy it from Angela and Michael. Production increased. Angela began stocking six varieties of tuna in her salon and giving a can away to her first-time customers. Those customers spread the word, and ThorTuna became the best-selling product at Angela’s salon.

There was only one problem – the labels on the cans were outdated and unattractive.  Angela called me and asked,

“Can your team design a feminine tuna can label that incorporates the ThorTuna and Angela Welsh Designs logos?”

A year ago, when Angela opened her salon, the Blogging Bistro team designed a host of marketing collateral for her, including:

  • Logo
  • Business cards
  • Appointment cards
  • Facebook page cover photo
  • Window signage decals
  • Gift certificate cards
  • Stickers to go on to-go hot drink cups and bags
  • Salon menu of services and prices
  • Tote bag logo

Angela loves pink; her marketing materials and her salon are predominately pink tones. But tuna can labels that feature Angela’s pink logo and Michael’s masculine ThorTuna logo? We’d never faced that challenge before.

Angela and I sat down together and sketched out a layout for the labels, and I relayed the specifics to our fantastic graphic designer, Marty Longe of Umbrella Graphics.

He designed the template for a new label and created six variations to represent each flavor of tuna:

  • Natural (beige)
  • Smoked (pink)
  • Lemon (yellow)
  • Dill (green)
  • Jalapeño (purple)
  • Garlic (blue)

My 16-year-old son and I taste-tested three varieties of ThorTuna (Natural, Dill, and Jalapeño) and our favorite so far is the Jalapeño – it has a bite! In our opinion, there’s absolutely no contest between ThorTuna and the name-brand stuff you buy at the supermarket – Michael and Angela’s tuna is light years ahead of “Charlie” in terms of texture and taste.

Thankfully, Angela and Michael sell and ship ThorTuna all over the U.S. It would make a unique gift for a colleague, birthday party, wedding shower or an event giveaway (Made in Washington!). And with Christmas coming up, a can of tuna would be a fun (and unexpected) stocking stuffer.
